Eritrea strengthens influence in Horn of Africa through strategic port control

Eritrea is emerging as a key geopolitical player in the Horn of Africa, particularly due to its strategic coastal locations along the Red Sea. The small nation, led by long-time ruler Isaias Afwerki, controls vital ports such as Assab and Massawa. Recent diplomatic discussions in Cairo, attended by regional powers including Egypt, Somalia, and a senior U.S. envoy, underscored Eritrea's growing influence in addressing security challenges in the region and facilitating trade.

The significance of Eritrea has intensified amid rising international trade tensions and the ongoing crisis in Yemen. The country’s coastline extends for over 1,000 kilometers, bordering Sudan and Djibouti. This geographic advantage positions Eritrea as a crucial passageway, especially since the Bab-al-Mandab Strait, which separates it from Yemen, is less than 30 kilometers wide. Abdurahman Sayed, director of the Horn of Africa Centre for Regional Integration, emphasized that Eritrea offers a secure maritime route amid Yemen's turmoil, where the Houthi militia has been attacking commercial vessels.

While Eritrea is strategically important, it is also a nation marked by severe repression. The government has not allowed elections since its founding 32 years ago, and dissent is strictly prohibited. Eritrea consistently ranks near the bottom in global freedom indices, often second only to North Korea. However, this political stability contrasts sharply with the violence and chaos seen in neighboring countries like Ethiopia, Sudan, and Yemen, making Eritrea an attractive partner for regional powers, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Eritrea's strongman governance may prove to be a double-edged sword. While it currently ensures internal peace, the concentration of power in the hands of one leader leaves the nation vulnerable to instability should anything happen to Afwerki. As countries vie for influence in the Horn of Africa, Eritrea's position will likely remain pivotal. The dynamics of the region will depend not only on Eritrea's strategic role but also on the longevity of its autocratic regime.
