US seeks naval coalition for Hormuz as UK, France hesitate

The United States is actively working to establish an international naval coalition to ensure safe passage for vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, but European allies are hesitating. The coalition effort, initiated by the U.S. in March, has yet to gain traction, with countries like the United Kingdom and France showing reluctance to commit to the mission amid ongoing tensions in the region.

This hesitance comes as the global economy faces strains due to disruptions in the vital waterway, which is crucial for oil transportation. Analysts suggest that European governments are wary of becoming entangled in a conflict with Iran, particularly without strong support from Gulf nations. HA Hellyer, a senior fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, noted that neither the UK nor France is keen on engaging in confrontations on behalf of others, especially when there is no clear regional demand for military intervention.

The U.S. initially proposed the idea of a maritime coalition after President Donald Trump criticized allies for insufficient support during the ongoing tensions with Iran. While the UK and France echoed some support for the mission, they have not committed to deployment. In mid-April, then-British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced intentions to lead a multinational effort focused on peaceful and defensive actions in the Strait of Hormuz. However, despite plans for military assets to be contributed, the coalition remains stalled while discussions about operational conditions continue.

A recent meeting involving over 30 states was held to discuss the initiative, but progress has been slow. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has emphasized the importance of securing maritime freedom, yet operational plans remain contingent on the political climate and a sustainable agreement. The future of the Hormuz naval coalition hangs in the balance as European nations weigh their options and the possibility of deeper involvement in a complex and unpredictable regional conflict.
