Madrid, Spain – Spain’s saffron supply chain faces a new threat as the United States announced an “economic onslaught” against Iran’s trade partners, potentially disrupting the flow of the spice that gives paella its signature colour and aroma. The move comes after the US threatened to target companies around the world that do business with Tehran, and the United Arab Emirates has already suspended trade ties with Iran. The U.S. Treasury has begun sanctioning entities that facilitate Iranian finance, including the Turkish Golden Global Bank, signalling a broader crackdown that could reach Spanish saffron importers.

Saffron is a staple of Spanish cuisine, especially in the central region of Castilla‑La Mancha where the crop is grown locally. However, Spain still relies heavily on Iran for its supply, with the country providing about 75 % of the EU’s Iranian saffron imports in 2023. Spanish exporters such as CEAE, founded in 1904, say the U.S. threat could jeopardise their main supplier. “We will have to worry about it when the US says what action it will actually take,” Jose Luis Guerrero of CEAE told Al Jazeera. The Spanish state trade body ICEX noted that Spain acts as a key gateway for Iranian saffron into Europe, handling not just import but also processing, packaging and branding. A disruption could hurt Spanish companies involved in these steps, even if consumers in Spain do not see a shortage.

The impact on trade remains unclear until the U.S. details its sanctions. Spanish officials point to their own domestic supply from Castilla‑La Mancha as a buffer. “Paella is not in danger,” ICEX director Maria Naranjo joked, but she warned that importers and distributors could feel the pressure. Analysts say the success of the U.S. strategy hinges on China, the main buyer of Iranian oil and a major trading partner. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has urged allies to align with the U.S. and warned that those who stay close to Iran will face isolation. Spain’s trade with Iran totals almost €245 million in 2025, a modest figure compared with Turkey or Pakistan, but still significant for the saffron sector.

As the U.S. moves forward, Spanish saffron producers will watch the unfolding sanctions closely. The next steps will determine whether alternative suppliers can be sourced quickly or if the industry will need to adapt to a new trading environment. For now, the saffron that colours paella remains safe, but the business behind the spice may face a tense future.
