Three project teams from NASA have awarded a total of $1.2 million to community college instructors to rewrite astronomy textbooks and course materials using NASAโ€™s vast trove of space images, datasets and interactive tools.

The grants, part of NASAโ€™s Community College Network, target instructors who teach the introductory astronomy survey course that enrolls nearly 300,000 U.S. undergraduates each year. Traditional textbooks rely on static diagrams and years-old photos, while NASAโ€™s archives hold high-resolution images from the James Webb Space Telescope, real-time solar weather feeds, exoplanet catalogs and 3D models of Martian terrain. Project leaders say the new materials will let students explore black holes with actual Chandra X-ray data or track the James Webbโ€™s observations as they happen.

Each team will build open-access modules that align with existing syllabi but swap textbook chapters for NASA resources. One group at Pasadena City College plans to integrate the JWSTโ€™s infrared spectra into labs on stellar evolution, while a team at Houston Community College will use lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter maps to redesign moon-phase activities. Early pilots last year showed students scored 12 percent higher on concept inventories when they worked with live data instead of textbook figures, and instructors reported stronger engagement in online and evening classes.

The awards run for two years and require all materials to be published under Creative Commons licenses, so any instructor can adapt them. If the pilot succeeds, NASA will expand the model to physics and Earth science courses, aiming to modernize the entire introductory STEM curriculum across the nationโ€™s 1,100 community colleges.
