A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia just 72 hours after Abelardo de La Espriella was inaugurated as president. The disaster has claimed over 260 lives, injured thousands, and caused widespread devastation in cities and towns across the region, marking a significant early challenge for the new far-right government.

The earthquake's timing has put immediate pressure on de La Espriella's administration to respond effectively. In response to the disaster, he declared an โ€œeconomic emergencyโ€ and announced three days of national mourning. The government has mobilized resources to search for survivors and deliver aid to the hardest-hit areas. Colombia has experience dealing with natural disasters, and emergency services, including firefighters and Civil Defence officials, have been deployed to assist in the recovery effort. Humanitarian aid from the capital, Bogota, has started to reach those in need, and temporary shelters are being established for displaced individuals.

However, the response has been hampered by complications stemming from the transition between the previous leftist administration of Gustavo Petro and the new government. A lack of proper handover has left the National Disaster Risk Management Unit in disarray, with officials from the outgoing government collaborating with a new team. This situation has led to slow and fragmented updates on the recovery efforts, as the current administration has decided that only the president's office will provide information, complicating communication with local authorities.

Chocรณ, one of the poorest regions near the earthquake's epicenter, faces additional challenges due to its geography and long history of neglect. Many communities there lack basic infrastructure, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage. Six airports have been closed, and landslides have obstructed numerous roads, further complicating rescue operations. As the government grapples with these challenges, the effectiveness of its response could have lasting implications for de La Espriella's leadership and the country's disaster preparedness in the future.
