Google is testing a new feature for its Chrome browser that could automatically hide the bookmarks bar for users who don't frequently use it. This development was identified by Windows Report and appears to be part of a broader effort by Chrome to streamline user experience. The feature aims to improve the visual space of the browser by concealing the bookmarks bar if it remains untouched for a certain period.

The timing of this test aligns with ongoing updates that Google is making to enhance browser functionality. Recently, the company also announced an automatic password-fixing tool, indicating a focus on improving user security and interface usability. The new bookmarks bar feature is designed to automatically hide the bar and notify users of this change, explaining why it occurred and providing an option to reverse the action if desired.

In addition to hiding the bookmarks bar, the update modifies how users can manage this feature within Chromeโ€™s settings. Instead of the current toggle option, users will soon have three choices: Always show the bookmarks bar, Only show it on the New Tab page, or Always hide it. The default setting appears to be "Only show on New Tab page," meaning the bar will only be visible when users open a new tab and will disappear when navigating to other websites.

While this feature is not yet available in the stable version of Chrome, users can opt to test it by enabling a specific flag within the browser settings. By navigating to chrome://flags, users can access the NTP Simplification Bookmark Bar flag to activate the feature. This experimental update raises questions about how users will adapt to the change and whether it will enhance or detract from their browsing experience.
