Owlcat Studios announced that its upcoming game set in the universe of the television series โ€œThe Expanseโ€ will focus on giving players real agency, a feature that many fans say was missing from the โ€œMass Effectโ€ franchise. The announcement came during the studioโ€™s first live stream on Tuesday, and the game is slated for a 2025 release on PC, PlayStationย 5 and Xbox Seriesย X.

The Expanse is a longโ€‘running sciโ€‘fi story with complex politics and deep worldโ€‘building. Fans have been waiting for a game that can capture that depth while letting choices feel significant. In โ€œMass Effect,โ€ players could make decisions that changed dialogue or minor plot points, but the core story remained the same. Critics argued that the gameโ€™s branching paths were shallow, and many felt their choices didnโ€™t matter. Owlcatโ€™s new design team says they will avoid that problem by tying decisions to major narrative outcomes, such as which factions rise to power, the fate of key characters, and the gameโ€™s ending.

In a statement released with the live stream, Owlcat said the game will use a dynamic branching engine that tracks player choices across multiple story arcs. The engine will allow different outcomes for the same decision, depending on earlier choices, creating a more personalized narrative. The studio also plans to let players influence ship design, crew composition, and resource management in ways that affect the story. Developers noted that the gameโ€™s writing will be modular, so scenes can rearrange without breaking continuity. They also mentioned that a beta will be available to early backers, giving the community a chance to test the branching system before launch.

The next steps for the project are a series of developer diaries and a public demo in late 2024. Owlcat will also hold a Q&A session to answer questions about the choice system. The studio says it will collect feedback from the demo to fineโ€‘tune how choices affect the gameโ€™s world. If the game succeeds, it could set a new standard for narrative depth in scienceโ€‘fiction titles and show that player agency can be both
