Dogs match mood to read human expressions

Can dogs read your facial expressions? It depends on your mood

A new study suggests dogs may read human facial expressions differently depending on the personโ€™s mood, adding nuance to how canines process human emotions.

Researchers at the University of Vienna tested 50 dogs by showing them images of people with either happy or angry expressions. When the person in the photo appeared happy, the dogs showed more relaxed body language, like wagging tails or approaching the image. But when the person looked angry, many dogs hesitated or withdrew. The twist: the dogsโ€™ reactions were stronger when the person in the photo was in a good mood themselves, suggesting their ability to interpret expressions is influenced by the senderโ€™s emotional state.

The findings, published in *Current Biology*, build on decades of research showing dogs are finely tuned to human emotions. Unlike earlier studies that focused on fixed expressions, this one highlights how contextโ€”like the mood behind the faceโ€”matters. Dogs have evolved alongside humans for thousands of years, developing keen social intelligence to navigate our cues. But until now, scientists werenโ€™t sure if they accounted for the emotional backdrop of those cues.

The studyโ€™s authors say the work could help explain why some dogs seem to comfort their owners during stress or avoid certain people when tensions rise. It also raises questions about how dogs generalize these skills to real-life interactions. Future research might explore whether training or breed differences affect this sensitivity. For pet owners, the takeaway is clear: dogs arenโ€™t just reading facesโ€”theyโ€™re reading the room.
