A global study of 1,758 butterfly species has found that 80% are expanding their range, with 79% of those shifts linked to climate change and extreme weather. The research, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, covered one in ten known butterfly species and showed that most are moving into new areas as temperatures rise.

This is the first large-scale analysis of butterfly range shifts worldwide. Researchers compiled records from across the globe and found that climate pressures are driving species to move poleward or to higher elevations. The study highlights how quickly ecosystems can respond to environmental changes, even in short-lived insects like butterflies.

The numbers tell a nuanced story. While 80% of species expanded their range, 27% also showed contractions in their original habitats. Another 22% shifted to higher elevations. Because many species experienced multiple changes at once, the percentages add up to more than 100%. These mixed results suggest that while some butterflies are adapting by moving, others are struggling to keep up with rapid climate shifts.

What happens next matters for biodiversity. Researchers warn that while range expansions may seem positive, they can disrupt local ecosystems by introducing new predators or competitors. The study also underscores the need for conservation strategies that account for species on the move. Without action, some butterflies may face habitat loss even as others benefit from warming conditions.
