A hard foul in the WNBA Indiana–Chicago game on Saturday left Chicago Sky guard Sophie Cunningham with a bloody nose and a swollen face after Sky guard DiJonai Carrington’s elbow connected under Cunningham’s chin during a fast-break layup.

Carrington was assessed a flagrant foul 1 and ejected, but not before Cunningham had to be helped off the court. The foul ended a six-game winning streak for the Sky and shifted attention back to the league’s ongoing debate over physical play, officiating and the balance between defense and safety. Cunningham is a 6-foot-2 guard known for her strength and finishing ability; Carrington, a former All-Star, is regarded as one of the league’s most aggressive perimeter defenders.

The play happened in the third quarter with 4:17 left. Video shows Cunningham gathering the ball in transition and rising for a layup. As she neared the rim, Carrington closed from behind and, in an attempt to contest, drove her right elbow upward into Cunningham’s face. Cunningham crumpled to the floor, bleeding immediately. Teammates and officials rushed to assist. Cunningham returned to the bench but did not re-enter the game. The league confirmed after review that the foul met flagrant criteria for contact to the head or neck.

The incident comes amid rising concern about player safety and the WNBA’s tolerance for aggressive defense. Earlier this month, a similar elbow from Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson to Chicago’s Kahleah Copper went unpenalized beyond a common foul, sparking criticism from players and analysts. Cunningham herself has been vocal about the physical toll in the league, calling out dangerous plays in interviews. The WNBA Players Association has pushed for stricter enforcement of flagrant fouls, especially in transition situations where speed and reaction time compress decision-making for both players and officials.

League spokesperson David Higdon said on Sunday that the incident would be reviewed further under the WNBA’s enhanced player safety protocols. No suspension has been announced, but the outcome could influence how referees call similar plays in the playoffs, which begin next week. Cunningham’s status for the Fever’s final regular-season game is uncertain. The foul has already stoked debate online, with some fans and commentators using the phrase “black privilege” to question why black players are often penalized more harshly for aggressive play. Others argue the term is a deflection used to avoid accountability in a league where black women face disproportionate scrutiny for their on-court demeanor.
