Australia orders Cryptolink Bitcoin ATMs offline over โ€˜basic reportingโ€™ failures

Australiaโ€™s corporate regulator has ordered Cryptolink to shut down its Bitcoin ATMs across the country after the company failed to meet basic reporting rules. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) suspended Cryptolinkโ€™s registration for three months and slapped it with a $56,340 fine for prior breaches. These ATMs let people buy and sell cryptocurrency using cash, bypassing traditional banks.

The crackdown reflects Australiaโ€™s push to tighten oversight of crypto firms following a surge in scams and money laundering through digital assets. ASIC has been aggressively policing unregistered financial services, especially after a 2023 Senate inquiry warned that weak controls were exposing consumers to fraud. Cryptolinkโ€™s ATMs operated without proper disclosures, leaving regulators blind to who was using them and how. The company admitted it didnโ€™t file required reports on transactions or customer identities, making it impossible to track suspicious activity.

Cryptolink isnโ€™t alone. ASIC has fined or banned several crypto businesses this year for similar lapses, including a $1.25 million penalty against another operator in March. The regulator argues that unregistered crypto ATMs pose a high risk because they can move large sums of money quickly without proper checks. Consumer groups say the failures put everyday users at risk of losing funds to fraud or accidental transfers.

Going forward, Cryptolink must stop all operations immediately and could face further penalties if it reoffends. The case highlights Australiaโ€™s broader effort to force crypto firms into compliance as global regulators eye the sector. For now, customers using these ATMs will need to find other ways to buy or sell Bitcoin, while ASIC continues to hunt for other unregistered players. The move signals a clear warning: in Australiaโ€™s regulated financial system, crypto firms canโ€™t ignore the rules.
