Liverpool have agreed a surprise loan deal for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, with the Uruguay international set to join on a season-long move.

The move comes amid uncertainty over Liverpool’s defensive options. Virgil van Dijk is sidelined long-term with a hamstring injury, and Ibrahima Konaté remains sidelined after a serious knee injury. Liverpool have also seen inconsistent form from Joel Matip and Joe Gomez this season. Araujo, 25, has struggled for regular playing time at Barcelona under Xavi, partly due to competition from youngsters like Eric García and Andreas Christensen’s recovery from injury. His physical presence, aerial ability and leadership could strengthen Liverpool’s backline significantly.

Araujo has made 13 appearances for Barcelona this season, scoring once. He has 14 caps for Uruguay and was part of their 2022 World Cup squad. Liverpool are expected to finalize the loan agreement in the coming days, with an option to make the move permanent next summer. The deal follows Liverpool’s pattern of securing experienced defenders on short-term deals, such as the loan of James Milner in 2015.

If Araujo impresses, he could become a key figure in Liverpool’s push for a top-four finish and a first Champions League return in two years. The move also represents a rare opportunity to sign a world-class defender without spending big upfront. Liverpool’s defensive frailties have cost them points this season, and Araujo’s arrival could be the jolt they need.
