Apple seems to have abandoned Cinematic mode, and thatโ€™s a mistake

Apple appears to have quietly dropped support for Cinematic mode, the signature video feature that let users create depth-of-field effects with a single lens on iPhones.

The move comes as Appleโ€™s camera team focuses on ProRes Log and other high-end tools for video professionals, leaving casual users without an easy way to replicate the shallow depth-of-field look that once set iPhones apart. Cinematic mode debuted with the iPhone 13 Pro in 2021 and was a headline feature, promising Hollywood-style blur for home movies. Yet in recent iOS updates, Apple has removed the mode from the main camera interface on newer iPhones, including the iPhone 16 series, without any public announcement.

Users and creators have noticed the disappearance. On social platforms, filmmakers and vloggers have pointed out that Cinematic mode no longer appears as an option when shooting video on iPhones released after 2023. Appleโ€™s own support pages and marketing materials still mention the feature, creating confusion. Analysts say the shift reflects Appleโ€™s pivot toward more advanced video features aimed at prosumers and content creators who demand raw video and higher bit rates, rather than polished, AI-assisted effects for casual users.

Itโ€™s a risky move. Cinematic mode was one of the few features that made iPhones stand out in a crowded smartphone camera market. By dropping it, Apple risks alienating everyday users who enjoyed the ease of creating cinematic footage without extra gear. The company may be betting that video professionals will pay for Pro-level tools, but itโ€™s leaving a gap in the middleโ€”users who just want a little Hollywood magic without the complexity. Without clear communication, the disappearance feels like an oversight, not a strategy, and could reinforce perceptions that Appleโ€™s camera innovations favor professionals over everyday users.
