Anthropic is turning on Claude Codeโ€™s auto mode by default next month.

The AI coding assistant from Anthropic will now operate in autonomous โ€œautoโ€ mode unless users opt out. The change aims to make AI coding faster and more hands-off. Users will still be able to switch back to manual control but must now deliberately choose that setting. The rollout starts in October and will be gradual, with full deployment expected by the end of the year.

This move reflects a broader shift in AI tools toward greater autonomy. Anthropic says developers want less friction when using coding assistants. Early feedback from beta users showed a strong preference for default auto mode, which reduces the need for constant prompts. The company also cites safety reviews and guardrails it has added to prevent runaway actions in auto mode. Critics, however, warn that default autonomy could lead to unintended changes in codebases if oversight is weak.

Claude Code has gained traction among developers since its launch earlier this year. It integrates with popular IDEs and supports multiple programming languages. Anthropic reports that over 500,000 developers have used Claude Code in some form, with a growing share of sessions now involving autonomous code generation. The company plans to expand auto mode features, including better conflict resolution and permission checks, before the full rollout.

The shift also raises questions about developer responsibility. While auto mode speeds up workflows, it shifts more decision-making to the AI. Anthropic insists safety remains a priority but acknowledges that users must remain vigilant. The company is expected to release updated documentation and best practice guides alongside the rollout.
