There are plenty of Google apps you probably use every day, but Android Pulse is definitely not one of them. In fact, you may not even know it exists. That could change soon, though, because this mysterious system app is suddenly showing up as an available update in the Play Store.
As first spotted by 9to5Google , Android Pulse is a Google-made app that works behind the scenes. Its job appears to be pretty simple: keep an eye out for apps or parts of Android that are using your phone’s resources in unusual ways.
Google, unsurprisingly, describes this in much less exciting terms. The Play Store listing says Android Pulse helps distribute rules for detecting anomalies related to “critical system resource consumption.”
Say an app goes rogue overnight and suddenly starts draining your battery, or something running in the background begins eating up far more memory or processing power than it normally should. Android Pulse appears designed to help Android recognize those unusual spikes. You won’t be opening Pulse to run a scan yourself, but what it does behind the scenes could eventually help Google catch problematic behavior faster.
And that’s what makes Android Pulse worth paying attention to. Battery drain, overheating, and badly behaved background apps are some of those Android problems that can be incredibly annoying because figuring out what is causing them isn’t always easy. If Google can get better at spotting these anomalies before they turn into bigger problems, that could ultimately mean a more stable Android experience for everyone.
Despite only now becoming more visible, Android Pulse itself isn’t particularly new. APKMirror has versions of the app dating back to March, with several builds appearing since then. Its Play Store listing also shows more than 10 million downloads, so there’s a good chance it’s already been sitting on millions of phones without anyone paying much attention.
There’s at least one small visual clue explaining the name. The App info page displays a green icon resembling a heartbeat or pulse reading — it’s fitting for an app that essentially seems to be checking Android’s vitals.
