Social Security recipients will see their checks rise again next year, with the official cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) set to be announced on October 14. The adjustment will apply to all beneficiaries, though the exact percentage remains unknown. Early projections from The Senior Citizens League suggest a 3.8% increase, which would add about $79 to the average monthly retirement benefit of $2,084 as of June 2026. The final COLA could be higher or lower, depending on inflation trends, but retirees will know the exact figure when the Social Security Administration releases its official update.

Beyond the COLA, four other key changes are on the way for 2027, each affecting different aspects of the program. The earnings test limits, which withhold benefits for those who work while under full retirement age, will be adjusted. For 2026, benefits are reduced for earnings over $24,480, but that threshold will rise next year. Another change involves the income required to earn a Social Security creditโ€”currently $1,890 in 2026โ€”which will also increase slightly. While most workers will still qualify for the four credits needed annually, those in lower-paying jobs may need to keep an eye on these adjustments to ensure they meet eligibility requirements.

Wealthier Americans will also see a small shift in payroll taxes. The cap on earnings subject to Social Security tax, now $184,500 in 2026, will rise in 2027. Most workers wonโ€™t notice the difference, but high earners could pay a few hundred dollars more in additional taxes. These routine updates happen every year, but they matter because they can quietly alter take-home pay or future benefit amounts. For retirees still working or those planning for retirement, staying aware of these changes can help avoid surprises and better prepare for financial decisions in the coming year.
