Duolingo will release its second-quarter earnings report on August 5, and investors will be closely watching key metrics to gauge the effectiveness of the company's new strategy. The focus will be on daily active user (DAU) growth, profitability trade-offs, and long-term targets set by management as they aim to reshape the company for the future.

The urgency behind this scrutiny stems from a significant strategic shift that began in 2026. While Duolingo has reported strong financial performance, including a 27% year-over-year revenue increase to $292 million and a 21% uptick in paid subscribers to 12.5 million in the first quarter, the company is now prioritizing user growth over immediate monetization. This pivot involves investing more in the free version of their app and enhancing AI-powered learning features to attract and retain users.

In the first quarter, DAUs climbed to 57 million, marking a 21% increase but a slowdown compared to the 49% growth recorded a year earlier. Investors will want to assess whether this deceleration is a temporary blip or a sign of deeper issues. Duolingo has set an ambitious goal of reaching 100 million DAUs by 2028, nearly doubling its current user base. Sustaining a growth rate of at least 20% will be crucial to remain on track for this target.

As Duolingo invests in creating a more generous free product and expanding its AI capabilities, there will be trade-offs in profitability. Management has cautioned that while gross margins have improved, adjusted EBITDA margins are expected to decrease from 30% to below 26% by 2026, with bookings growth projected at only 11%. Investors are advised to remain patient and not panic over potential softening margins or bookings growth in Q2. The key question will be whether these sacrifices yield the desired increase in user engagement and growth, which could ultimately enhance Duolingo's long-term prospects.
